The World Council of Churches (WCC) has condemned the bad film against Islam which has led to Muslims in some countries to demonstrate and even attack USA embassies.
The controversial film, entitled ‘Innocence of Muslims’ reportedly depict the pillar of Islam, Mohammed as a womanizer and interested in criminal activities.
The general secretary of WCC, Reverend Olav Fykse Tveit expressed great regret on making of the film saying it was an insult to the
Muslim faith. He however said that it was done by individuals.
The film, acted in USA has recently sparked off riotous reactions, including attacks on the US embassies in Libya, Egypt, Yemen ans
Nigeria.
Reverend Tveit, in a statement he has issued said,’ There should be no violence. We urge for non-violence, respect for religions and the
Christian and Muslims to stand together in condemning such insults.’
He said that the film was produced and distributed by particular individuals who are not in any way representative of the attitudes of
any country or mainstream religious group.
Tveit affirmed WCC’s continuing commitment to the dialogue with the Muslim partners. He said,’ We are committed to working together with our Muslim partners for justice and peace. We believe that it is tragic if the reactions provoked by this film were in turn to lead to
negative stereotyping of Muslims.’
He requested governments where riots related to the film are taking place to ensure that innocent people, especially the Americans are not killed and their property should not be destroyed.
