Uhuru Kenyatta gets joint consolation message from European council and European commission

The president of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and the president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso have sent a joint consolation message to the president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta on the terrorist attack in Nairobi in which over 60 people have been confirmed dead and 175 injured.

The joint message said, ”It was with great shock and sadness that we learnt of the brutal attack on innocent citizens at the Westgate
Shopping Centre in Nairobi on Saturday. The European Union firmly condemns all such terror attacks.

We send our most sincere condolences to the families and friends of the bereaved and our sympathy to those injured and all affected by the events. On a personal note we would like to express to you our deepest sympathy for your loss of family members in the tragedy. Our thoughts are with you and all Kenyan people.

In the face of this appalling attack we would like to reaffirm our strong support for Kenya and the Kenyan people. Please feel assured of
our solidarity at these times. Such acts must not be allowed to weaken our common resolve to eliminate the scourge of terrorism from Eastern Africa and to prevent such attacks in the future.

We are conscious that it makes all the more important our continued cooperation in freeing Somalia and Kenya from the scourge of
Al-Shabab, promoting security and development for all the people of Kenya, and building in Somalia a stable and prosperous state, subject to the rule of law, to which refugees can safely return. ”
