Mohamed Ibn Chambas to brief the UN security council on latest development around West Africa and Sahel

From the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the body’s Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head, will present to the Security Council this Thursday, 13th of July, 2017 his activity report covering the period from 1st January 2017 to 30 June 2017.

This is contained in a Press release fetched from the APO website as submitted by UNOWAS. The release disclosed that the Special Representative will focus on the persistence of security threats such as terrorist activities, cross-border crime, as well as trafficking in drugs, arms and persons.

In addition, as reported, Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas will also discuss the security and humanitarian situation in the Lake Chad Basin, which according to the release, remains a cause for concern despite efforts to combat Boko Haram.

In is address, Mr. Ibn Chambas will also talk about “the peaceful resolution of the post-electoral crisis in the Gambia.” It is equally stated in the release that the Special Representative will do a brief on the ongoing political reforms and the upcoming elections in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Senegal.

The general public can as well follow the briefing via the UN organisation channel on webtv at 4PM GMT on Thursday, 13th of July, 2017. The release further revealed that the implementation of the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (UNISS) and the need to strengthen coordination with the various partners will also be addressed.
