Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Zimbabwean President on Friday, visited his counterpart, Joao Lorenco, the President of Angola. At the meeting, Mnangagwa briefed Lorenco on the political issues in Zimbabwe, including the developments.
In addition, President Mnangagwa also assured the Angolan President that Zimbabwe would hold the coming general elections just as scheduled and that the former President, Robert Mugabe is safe and cared for.
Joao Lorenco, the Angolan President, is also the current chairperson of the Southern African Development Community’s Organ for Politics, Defence and Security.
After the two presidents’ meeting, Mnangagwa met with the press, where he shared what himself and Lorenco had discussed about – in an interview.
‘It was an excellent meeting, I came to Luanda to brief my senior, President Lourenco about the transition that has taken place in Zimbabwe,’ Mnangagwa said.
The Zimbabwean President also took the chance to clear the media on the claims raised by Jonathan Moyo, the former Zimbabwe minister that Mnangagwa’s government was planning on postponing the elections to later three years. President Mnangagwa thus informed and assured that the elections in Zimbabwe will be held as scheduled.
George Charamba, the Information Secretary and the President’s Spokesman was also reported commenting on Moyo’s claims, saying that the elections in Zimbabwe would be held sooner than most people expect.
Charamba added that Jonathan Moyo must be facing some psychological problems as he cannot accept the fact that he came from the zenith of power to nothingness.
‘How could Moyo, who is not even in the country and abandoned his family, know about what is happening in the country more than those who are in the country,’ Charamba was quoted as saying.
Commenting on Robert Mugabe’s well being, President Mnangagwa still at his interview, informed that his government was ready and determined to preserve the former President’s rich legacy.
‘We had this transition peacefully and the former President Robert Mugabe is very safe, we will look after him, we will care for him. He is our founding father of the nation, he is our revolutionary icon and we are determined to preserve his legacy,’ he said.
‘Those criminals who had surrounded him, the transition has been able to remove them from positions of influence,’ President Mnangagwa added.
