In reaction to the United States ambassador’s condemnation of the court judgment on gay, the Zambian government has directed that the ambassador leave the country immediately.

While awaiting a diplomatic response from the United States on his action, the country’s president, Edgar Lungu, stated that his nation would never fail to comply strictly with the nation’s anti-homosexuality laws, stressing that homosexuality was “unbiblical and un-Christian”.

Even animals don’t do it. Why should we be forced to do it? We want to be forced to do it because we want to be seen to be smart, to be seen.

“Therefore the Zambian government is still waiting for a response from the United States government concerning the decision we have taken,” he noted.

The ambassador, Ambassador Daniel Foote, who had criticized the Zambian government for jailing a gay couple for 15 years, was quoted as saying: “I was horrified by the 15-year jail term handed to a gay couple.”

The open criticism of the Zambian government and declaration of his pro-gay stance triggered Daniel’s expulsion from the country.

In a stern response to Foote’s attack, Zambia’s Foreign Minister released a statement asking the ambassador to refer to ongoings in Washington where President Trump was pushing pro-family and anti-LGBTI policies.

A December 15, 2019 statement from the presidency stated: “State House will like to clarify that the president was not referring to any new démarche but the same one issued by Foreign Affairs.”
