European legislators to move resolutions draft on Kashnmir, citizenship amendment act
Indian’s 2019 Citizenship Amendment Act and Clampdown on Jammu and Kashmir among other counts of actions by India government have got the EU government on its feet to protect the image of the international democracies.
The vast majority of members of the European Parliament had moved six scathing resolutions on Citizenship Amendment Act and Clampdown on Jammu and Kashmir.
The draft resolutions would be taken up in Brussels on January 29 during a plenary session of the European Parliament at 6:00p.m and the parliament would vote on it on January 30.
Responding to the move by the members the European Parliament, the Ministry of External Affairs reacted that, “We are informed that some members of the EU Parliament intend to move a draft resolution on the CAA. The CAA is a matter that is entirely internal to India.”
“Moreover, the legislation has been adopted by due process and through democratic means after a public debate in both Houses of Parliament,” it added.
The government draws a comparison saying that the EU has at some point followed the same approach. They therefore hope that the sponsors of the draft would consult with the Indian government to get “full and accurate assessment of the facts before they proceed.”
The resolutions count over a dozen different alleged actions by the Indian government in violation of international norms, Indian’s international commitments to Human Rights.
Also, at the UN Security Council, some illegal actions: torture of Jammu and Kashmir during detention, opening of fires on protesters against the CAA by the police, causing severe human suffering which could potentially result in what it called “the largest statelessness crisis in the world.”
The Delhi government strongly protecting its sovereignty reminded the EU to accord some degree of honour to Delhi’s internal democracy.
“As fellow democracies, the EU Parliament should not take actions that call into question the rights and authority of democratically elected legislatures in other regions of the world,” a government source said.
The resolutions that seem to be putting India-EU ties to test are sponsored by six European Parliamentarian groups.
The political groups that moved the resolutions are: the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats with 154 members; the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) with 182 members; European United Left and Nordic Green Left with 41 members; Greens/European Free Alliance with 75 members; Conservatives and Reformists with 66 members; and the Renew Europe Group with 108 members.
