Earthquake kills nine people in Turkey

About nine people have died and 37 others injured in Turkey’s Van province earthquake.

The country’s Health Minister, Fahrettin Koca, disclosed that nine people are in serious condition.

The Interior Minister, Suleyman Soylu, confirmed that three children died in the disaster.

He added that some 1,066 buildings have collapsed.

“The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority has begun rescue work. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing,” Soylu said.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centres (EMSC) said that the quake had a depth of 5 km (3.1 miles), and the magnitude was 5.7.

Turkish public broadcaster TRT World stated that it affected about 43 villages in Turkey. stressed that it was a history of powerful earthquakes.

TRT added that damage inspection teams had moved to the region. There were also reports of building collapses in the Turkish city of Van.

Turkish authorities noted that many people were in the rubble. But, rescue operations are underway. The earthquake affected dozens of mountainous villages. In addition, the area is one of the most seismically active areas in the world.
