Italy loses 627 people in 24 hours

Italy has drafted in soldiers to help enforce the coronavirus lockdown imposed on soldiers after officials announced the death of 627 new deaths within 24 hours.

President of Lombardy region, where infections first exploded last month, told reporters in a conference that the government had agreed that the military would be used to help enforce the lockdown.

“The request to use the army has been accepted and 114 soldiers will be on ground throughout Lombard. it is still too late, but it is positive. Unfortunately we are no seeing a change of trend in the numbers, which are rising,” he said.

The soldiers have hence been deployed in the region to ensure general security in the streets.

An Italian nurse also said the situation was so dire that he dead was no longer counted.

“We are working in a state of very high stress and tension, unfortunately, we can contain the situation in Lombardy, there is a high level of contagion and we are not even counting the dead anymore,” she said.

Meanwhile, a doctor in Lombardy city of Cremona, Romano Paolucci said a lot of deaths had been recorded and that the medical staff were battling to cope with a lack of equipment, increasing sickness.

“I would say that we are at the end of our strength, this is a small hospital and hospital and we are taking in a lot of people, I would say the capacity is finished,” he said.

“We do not have sufficient resources and especially staff because from everything else now and the staff are beginning to get sick.” He added.
