The two countries, Canada and Australia have called for the postponement of the 2020 Olympics Games scheduled to start by July 24 in Tokyo.
They both stated his in different statements from the Olympic committees for their countries.
Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympics committee said in a joint statement that, “While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community…this is no solely about athlete health, it is about public health.”
Australian Olympic Committee’s executive board which met by teleconference on Monday also agreed unanimously that an Australian Olympic team cannot be assembled.
“Our athletes now need to prioritize their own health and of those around them and to be able to return their families.”
The country’s Team Chef de Mission for Tokyo also added that, “it is clear that Games can’t be held in July, our athletes have been magnificent in their positive attitude to training and preparing, but the stress and uncertainty has been extremely challenging for them.”
However, the International Olympic Commie’s executive board said it will not cancel the Olympics but may consider a postponement.
The committee stated that cancelling the Olympic will, “destroy the Olympic Dream of 11,000 athletes” and all those who support them adding that it will rather consider several options to deal with the ongoing pandemic, including modifying plans to allow 2020 Tokyo Games to begin on schedule on July 24 or changing the start date for the games.
