Covid-19: BBC makes maiden broadcast of Muslim call to prayer

BBC radio has commenced the broadcast of Friday prayers for Muslims in the United Kingdom.

Different imams lead the broadcast every week on 14 BBC Local radio stations, where verses from the Quran and quotes from Prophet Muhammad (SAW) are recited before delivering sermons and leading listeners in prayers.

Chris Burns, head of BBC Local Radio said, “Local radio is all about connecting communities and we hope these weekly reflections will go some way to helping Muslims feel a sense of community while they are isolating.”

He further stated that “The prayer broadcast began last week and will continue for as long as Muslims are unable to attend their local mosques.”

There are also plans for regular broadcasts for other minorities, such as Hindu and Jewish communities.” he concluded

The station’s audiences are in parts of Britain with large communities: Leeds, Sheffield, Lancashire, Manchester, the West Midlands, Leicester, Stoke, Derby, Nottingham Coventry and Warkwicksire.
