COVID-19: Irish Prime Minister joins medical team, provides free services
The Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar has rejoined the country’s medical team to begin work as a medical doctor running a shift per week.
Ireland’s health service appealed last month to former healthcare practitioners to register their availability during the pandemic.
A statement from his office stated that “Dr Varadkar rejoined the medical register last month. He has offered his services to the HSE for one session a week in areas that are within his scope of practice.”
“Many of his family and friends are working in the health service. He wanted to help out even in a small way,” it added
The Prime Minister is a son to a doctor and a nurse, and his partner, Mathew Barrett, as well as his two sisters and their husbands work in the health service.
Varadkar resigned, following the election after Ireland’s parliament failed to elect a Taoiseach. He stayed on because the parties have been unable to agree on a coalition government and the pandemic has disrupted the negotiations.
