In an effort to prevent spread of misinformation about coronavirus, YouTube has begun banning of any coronavirus-related contents that lack medical backing.
The platform has deemed it necessary to stamp out any content on the platform that contradicts World Health Organization advice and that is medically unsubstantiated which would amount to violation of YouTube policy
While disclosing this on Thursday April 23, 2020, the Chief Executive of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki, stated that the ban followed the widely spread conspiracy theories that link Covid-19 to 5G networks.
“Anything that would go against World Health Organization recommendations would be a violation of our policy,” said Wojcicki.
“So people saying, ‘Take vitamin C, take turmeric, we’ll cure you,’ those are the examples of things that would be a violation of our policy,” she added.
Oliver Dowden, the UK culture secretary applaudsed the move by YouTube and other social media and technology companies saying that such a move would help prevent misinformation.
“I pay tribute to the work they have done,” said Oliver Dowden.
