Jon Jones has announced that he is relinquishing his light heavyweight title.
Jones made the announcement announced on May 31, 2020 on on his Twitter handle.
This announcement came after a week-long dispute between him and the promotion’s president, Dana White who claimed that Jones was asking for Deontay Wilder money.
Jones, 32, however denied the claims, saying that he never put a price on the super-fight with Francis Ngannou.
He branded White a liar and requested him to share text messages of their price discussion to prove his point.
Being the dominant force in the Light Heavyweight division, Jones is willing to return to fight and take on Middleweight Champion, Israel Adesanya, although for a price that is worth it.
Jones said on Sunday that he had no intention of fighting Dominick Reyes or Jan Blachowicz because he apparently has nothing to gain from such fights.
He therefore suggested that both should fight to become new light heavyweight king.
While revealing in a tweet, Jones wrote,
“#ESPN Reyes vs Jan For the UFC light heavyweight championship of the world.”
“As of right now, I got nothing to really gain fighting either of them. Let me know if you guys want to set up a day in 2021 for that Izzy fight. Hopefully you guys will be willing to pay by then,” he added.
When asked if he truly was relinquishing his title, he admitted he was. He further went ahead and told his fans to address him as ‘JJ’ not as ‘champ’.
“Bones out, when you see me in the street just call me JJ,” he tweeted.
When told that he was hurting himself by his actions, Jones replied saying his value is worth more than what he is being paid by the UFC right now.
“I hurt myself every time I walk out there and take a punch to the head and Not feel my pay is worth it anymore,” he said.
Jones is considered as the greatest ever MMA fighter by his boss for his record. Jones has 26 wins, one loss due to disqualification and one no-contest.
Jones remains unbeaten in his division. The only blemishes he has on his record were illegal downward elbows and drug tests results.
While praising Jones for his accomplishment, White once said, “Jon Jones is the GOAT. Jon Jones is the greatest to ever do it.
“There’s no debate about it if you look at what the guy has accomplished, and what he was doing while he accomplished these things. You know what I mean?”
