President Ghani, U.S. Secretary of State discuss Afghan peace process
The Presidentof Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, and the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have discussed the way forward to Afghan peace process.
The discussion, which was held via videoconference on Tuesday June 2, 2020, centred on the joint efforts to advance the agenda of peace and stability in Afghanistan.
The US Secretary of State said, “The main goal of the United States is a united, independent, democratic and stable Afghanistan within the framework of the continued long-term and strategic relations between the two countries.
“And we will work with the Afghan government to achieve that.”
President Ghani explained the Afghan government’s roadmap for a sustainable peace and stability in the country.
While stressing the need to multiply efforts for a stable, united and free Afghanistan, Ghani underlined that working groups of the both sides should work together to achieve the objectives of the aforementioned roadmap.
In the meeting, First Vice President, Amrullah Saleh, spelled out a comprehensive analysis and review of the reduction in violence days in the country.
He highlighted the importance of holding to a cease fire for further progress in the peace process.
The two sides also discussed the future steps in the Afghan peace process, in particular the release of Taliban prisoners, venue for the intra-Afghan negotiations.
The emphasized the need to keep the people informed of the developments before and during the negotiations as they unfold.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah also talked over the steps taken by the High Council for National Reconciliation and process.
During the VTC, it was also agreed that both sides should continue to work on the details of the peace process during the upcoming days.
