A Muslim woman, Mrs Haleemah Olamade Ahmad, has partnered Cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for Peace, to support people with food items and facemasks to community people in Minna, Niger State.

While disclosing this on Thursday July 9, 2020, Mrs Ahmad stated the initiative was aimed at supporting families and individuals who have lost their means of livelihoods, following the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

According to her, WHO’s declaration of coronavirus as a pandemic has affected the whole world.

“With lockdown measures put in place by state and federal governments, there has been unprecedented economic downturn for many individuals and families.

“Many have lost their jobs, while others have become redundant as a result of the biting effects of the pandemic,” Mrs Ahmad said.

She added that many individuals, organizations and government made efforts towards organizing various forms of sensitization and provision of palliatives for affected people during the lockdown.

“With the ease of lockdown restrictions by states and federal government, and the return to “normal life” by many, it is easy to forget that there are a lot of people who are still redundant or unable to go back to work,” she stated.

While speaking about the distribution of the items, she disclosed that top on this list are the teachers of many private schools across the country, and others who have been laid off their job.

“We are dealing with not just coronavirus but also hunger virus. Hunger, sickness, and death are no respecter of anybody.

“It doesn’t care what color, faith, race or status you belong to. Imagine a family where both husband and wife are private school teachers and salary has not been paid from April,” Ahmad lamented.

She further stated that with the support from the COFP, she was able to reach out to some of these vulnerable people within her community.

“One of the beneficiaries of this intervention is a private school teacher who goes from house to house washing clothes so that the family doesn’t go hungry.

“As we continue to do the little we can, we pray Allah to cleanse our planet of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases,” she concluded.
