Nigerian government suspends Twitter’s operations
The Federal Government of Nigeria has suspended the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement issued in Abuja, the country’s federal territory on Friday June 4, 2021.
Explaining the reason for the indefinite suspension, Lai Muhammed cited the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
The minister said, “The Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all social media operations in Nigeria.”
However, Twitter is still up in Nigeria as users still have access to the platform. The minister remains silent on the time the suspension would be enforced.
