Saudi Arabia considers BRICS membership invitation for economic partnership

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, has responded to the recent invitation extended by the BRICS group for membership, expressing the Kingdom’s interest in exploring the opportunity for enhanced economic collaboration.

During a press conference held after participating in a summit of the BRICS group in Johannesburg, Prince Faisal affirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to its foreign policy of cultivating economic partnerships. He stated, “The Kingdom highly values the invitation from BRICS for membership and is currently evaluating its implications.”

“Prince Faisal emphasized that Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic strategies are centered around strengthening economic ties and maximizing developmental cooperation. He revealed, “As we await more comprehensive details about the criteria and responsibilities associated with membership, we will meticulously assess the proposal and make a decision that aligns with our internal protocols.”

“Acknowledging the significance of BRICS as a vital conduit for fostering economic cooperation, Prince Faisal expressed gratitude for the invitation, attributing it to the Kingdom’s robust economic status and global influence. He underscored the overarching objective of Saudi Arabia’s partnerships, which revolves around bolstering economic growth and international development”.

“This noteworthy invitation comes as BRICS undergoes its first expansion in over a decade, extending invitations to several nations, including Saudi Arabia, to join its ranks. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, while concluding the annual summit in Johannesburg, announced the effective date of the membership. “Saudi Arabia and other invited countries will officially become BRICS members starting January 1, 2024,” he confirmed”.

“BRICS, originally comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is poised to embark on a new phase of collaboration with the inclusion of Saudi Arabia, which demonstrates the Kingdom’s commitment to achieving its global objectives and contributing to the group’s mutual growth and prosperity”.
