Iraq reaffirms commitment to regional peace, cooperation
In a meeting held on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi discussed the pivotal role of Iraq in ensuring regional stability and cooperation.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s steadfast commitment to not allowing its territory to be used as a launching pad for attacks on its neighboring nations. He emphasized the importance of nurturing strong relations with Iran and fostering collaboration across various sectors that benefit both countries.
One significant point of discussion was the need to expedite joint projects, such as the recently proposed railway project designed to facilitate passenger transport between the two nations. Al-Sudani underscored that Iraq remains dedicated to safeguarding its security and sovereignty while promoting dialogue as the means to address regional crises comprehensively.
President Raisi expressed gratitude to the Iraqi government for its hospitality in hosting Iranian pilgrims during the Arbaeen anniversary of Imam Hussein and his companions. He characterized the relations between Iran and Iraq as not only important but also unique.
Moreover, President Raisi stressed the importance of enhancing trade and economic ties between the two nations through mutually beneficial initiatives. He commended Iraq’s efforts in addressing challenges along its northern border, highlighting the significance of these endeavors.
The meeting between the leaders reaffirms the commitment of Iraq and Iran to fostering peace, stability, and cooperation in the region, while firmly rejecting any use of Iraqi territory for hostile actions against neighboring countries.
