Cairo summit for peace addresses ongoing crisis in Palestine
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani urged the international community to take swift action to address the escalating crisis in Palestine. The summit, hosted in the Egyptian capital, saw leaders from various nations in attendance.
Al-Sudani expressed grave concern over the situation in Palestine, highlighting the Israeli airstrikes targeting Palestinian civilians, including homes, churches, and hospitals. He specifically referred to the tragic Al-Mamdani Hospital massacre as an alarming example of the dire situation.
The Iraqi Prime Minister emphasized that the ongoing conflict in Palestine not only threatens regional security but also has far-reaching global implications. He argued that it could disrupt energy supplies to international markets, exacerbate economic crises, and potentially lead to more profound conflicts.
Furthermore, Al-Sudani rejected any plans for the resettlement of Palestinians and the creation of refugee camps, underlining the need for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of border crossings to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza. He also called for efforts to lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip and the establishment of a fund to support reconstruction in the region.
The Iraqi Prime Minister’s participation in the summit came following an invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who gathered various world leaders to address the crisis. Notably, Al-Sudani’s address comes at a time when Israeli forces are reportedly preparing for a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip in response to attacks by Hamas militants on Israeli cities, which claimed the lives of more than a thousand Israelis. The situation in the region remains highly volatile, with hopes for a peaceful resolution taking center stage at the Cairo Summit for Peace.
