Muslims in east Africa have been advised to educate their children in both secular and religious schools.
East African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda have substantial number of Muslims.
The advice follows reports that many times Muslims in east African states pay more attention to religious education than secular education.
The advice has been given by Buganda Kingdom’s prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu while officially opening Annasiri Education Center in the coastal town of Mokowe, Lamu county
in Kenya.
Kakungulu said, ‘We need to change our attitude to wars education, the kind of theological thoughts which satisfied Muslims in the middle ages, can not satisfy them today.’
He said that in order to be successful in life today, both disciplines should be embraced.
He said, ‘Only students who train in the multidisciplinary and inter disciplinary approach to Islamic studies will confront and study the complex multidimensional contemporary and future problems of Muslim societies. ‘
He said that the current world is dynamic and thus Muslims need to prepare for changes.
‘If we do not do so, we will inevitably be overtaken by change of events.’ he said.
He urged Muslims in Lamu and east Africa in general to continue yearning for knowledge and supporting government programs.
