United nations has expressed it’s commitment to support Somalia’s efforts to acquire peace and stability.
UN’s Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, has visited Mogadishu and expressed the organizations’ determination to support the embattled country to build peace.
During his visit, Feltman met with Somalia’s Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon, the Ministers of Justice, Defense and Interior and the Speaker of the Somali Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari.
He reportedly discussed a range of issues with the Somali authorities, including the positive political and security gains made in Somalia. He encouraged dialogue and reconciliation, including with Somali land and Puntland.
He expressed concerns over human rights, particularly sexual violence against women and encouraged the Government to take the necessary steps to strengthen promotion and protection of human rights.
Feltman expressed the United Nation’s firm commitment to support the Somali government in its efforts to extend state authority and peace dividends to the population at large, and address the security and humanitarian challenges it faces.
He said, ‘I have been inspired and encouraged by what I heard today from the Somali authorities. This is a Government which has both vision and a practical plan to implement it.’
He appreciated that Somalia is beginning to undergo a profound transformation.
Somalia has been in chaos for over two decades after Islamic militants, the Al Shabab imposed themselves as leaders
and subjected civilians to torture and killings.
AU troop confronted the militants in the past few months and have been successfully flushing the militants out from various
towns. Now the country is slowly returning to sanity.
