Security agencies in Libya are hunting for unknown gunmen who yesterday ambushed  a convoy of  Libyan police.

According to an eye witness, Abu Kalidh, the police convoy was transporting detainees to a jail located in the suburb of the country’s capital, Tripoli.

‘One prisoner was killed during the ambush while a good number of others were injured. There was much confusion as both sides exchanged gunfire.’

Libya’s minister of justice, Salah al-Marghani confirmed the attack but assured the public that the situation was under control. He condemned the act saying that it was aimed at undermining the country’s security.

The injured prisoners were rushed to hospital where those in critical condition were  admitted. The others who were not affected by the shoot-out were rushed to the prison.

Ever since Muammar Qaddafi’s regime was overthrown in 2011 some parts of Libya have been hit by insecurity brought about by disgruntled militia. It is common for clashes between government troops and militia to take place over minor issues.

So far no arrests of suspected attackers have been made but police and other security organizations are working around the clock to arrest those responsible for the incident.
