Kenya’s new president Uhuru Kenyatta is for the first time since becoming president to travel to Britain on invitation of British Prime Minister David Cameron.
The invitation has come at a time when many observers believe that Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto are shunned by the European countries due to the ICC charges against them.
While in London, Kenyatta is expected to join other world leaders for this year’s London conference on Somalia which begins next Tuesday. The British High Commission in Kenya confirmed that Mr Kenyatta had been invited to London where he is expected to hold bilateral talks with Mr Cameron.
Britain and Kenya are longtime business partners and they always endeavored to keep cordial relationship.
The head of communication at the British high commission in Kenya, John Bradshaw said, ‘President Kenyatta will travel to London. It is true that he has been invited to London. He will be attending an International Conference on Somali organized jointly by the British and the Somali governments.’
He said Mr Cameron’s invitation was delivered to Mr Kenyatta last week by the British High Commissioner to Kenya Christian Turner.
‘Kenya plays a vital role on Somalia, having nearly 5,000 troops in Somalia, and hosting more Somali refugees than any other nation, ‘Mr. Bradshaw said.
Kenyatta has shown willingness to visit London, according to the the director of the Presidential Press Service Isaya Kabira. He confirmed that Kenyatta will go to London next week.
