Most religious leaders and organizations in Nigeria have welcomed the law makers voting in favor of the bill that criminalizes same sex marriage.
Reverend James Okuge said, ‘What the law makers have done is commendable.A right thinking community can not allow same sex marriage.Same sex marriage is inhumane and ridiculous.’
Women organization leader, Stella Emenike said, ‘The Bible is against same sex marriage. I appreciate our leaders for being realistic and following what the Bible says against same sex marriage. We all say no to same sex marriage.’
However, Catherine Ashton, the high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy and Vice President of the Commission is not happy about what the law makers in Nigeria have done.
She said, ‘I am concerned that Nigerian law makers have voted to accept a bill that would criminalize same sex marriage. The EU seeks neither to promote nor discourage same sex marriages, but has been clear it opposes discrimination or any form of legislation that seeks to persecute someone on the basis of sexual orientation. ‘

Ashton said that the EU also opposes any restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly, or persecution of those who defend these freedoms.
