President Museveni has emphasized the need for industrialization and electricity generation in the Nile basin saying the biggest threat to the River Nile is continued under development in the tropics.
He said industrialization will attract people away from agriculture while electricity will stop reckless use of wood fuel and deforestation which are the major threats to the River Nile.
The President was yesterday meeting the Egyptian Interim Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Fahmy at his country home in Rwakitura, Kiruhura District. Minister Nabil Fahmy who was accompanied by the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Sabry Magdy Sabry and the Egyptian ambassador to Uganda Ahmed Abdel Aziz Mostafa is on a tour of the
Nile Basin countries in an attempt to strengthen relations and cooperation within the region.
Minister Fahmy also delivered a special message from interim President Adly Mansour to President Museveni and said his country wants to strengthen cooperation between the two countries and ensure the promotion of development, stability and prosperity for the peoples of the Nile Basin countries, adding that they are keen to contribute
their expertise and to explore investment in the Nile Basin.
The Nile Basin is currently faced with a number of environmental threats including agricultural degradation, deforestation and declining water levels The President and his guests discussed various bilateral issues including the situation in Eastern Congo, the situation in the Horn of Africa and the African Union. The meeting was attended by the Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Sam Kutesa.
