(Plainfield, IN 3/17/16) – The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) today offered heartfelt condolences to the family of Br. Waheed Mustapha, a pioneering leader of the Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA).

In a statement ISNA President Azhar Azeez said:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Br. Waheed Mustapha. He had a great passion for working with youth and was an influential mentor for many youth. He leaves behind a great legacy which continues through the numerous leaders he inspired and mentored.”

Mustapha served as the MYNA Canada Advisor for many years. He would sacrifice his time to spend a week’s long camp with youth throughout the United States and Canada.  He helped educate a significant number of Muslim youth who have since gone on to earn leadership positions within the community and in their careers. His guidance and mentoring changed the lives of hundreds of young people.

ISNA Executive Council Member Fatima Salman said in a reflection:

“Waheed Mustapha was amongst the first advisors of MYNA while we were growing up. He was my own personal advisor when I was president of MYNA. He trained many youth and developed leadership qualities within us, inspired us, instilled in us a love for Islam and to serve the community for His sake. As many MYNA Alumni heard the news this morning, they started thinking of him and reminding each other of the stories and experiences they had with him, how much a part of our lives he had been, and how influential he was in the work we do today.”

May Allah grant him the highest heaven and give his family patience during this difficult time.

The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) is the largest and oldest Islamic umbrella organization in North America. Its mission is to foster the development of the Muslim community, interfaith relations, civic engagement, and better understanding of Islam.
