South Sudan’s former Vice President, Dr Riek Machar Teny has reportedly appointed a new representative to Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a statement he released today, Machar said that he has appointed Amos Addison Mangie Bousumo as SPLM/SPLA (IO)
representative to Democratic Republic of Congo with effect from,January 8th, 2017.
The statement said, ”Pursuant to the resolutions of the SPLM/A Political Bureau September 23, 2016 and SPLM (IO) Constitution, I, Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon, Chairman and Commander-in-Chief, SPLM/SPLA (IO), do hereby appoint Cde Amos Addison Mangie Bousumo as SPLM/SPLA (IO) Representative to Democratic Republic of Congo with effect from January 8th 2017”
In a related development, Machar has appointed Mbiko Cepehas Barakati as the SPLMA (IO) Chapter Country Coordinator for the Democratic Republic of Congo with effect from January 8th, 2017.
Riek Machar was vice president of South Sudan up to September last year when fighters loyal to him fought against the South Sudan government troops in Juba leading to his fleeing into exile.
Riek Machar escaped on foot to DRC where he was rescued at the border by DRC government forces and NGOs. He flew to Sudan for treatment and later relocated to South Africa where he currently lives.
Dr. Machar has made over 25 new appointments in the last 2 months and relieved most of the representatives and military governors whom he appointed during the first phase of the war.
Since September last year over 600,000 South Sudanese have fled the fighting between government troops and rebels to neighboring countries including DRC, Uganda, Ethiopia and Sudan.
