Grenade attack kills 8 in Burundi
Burundi late on Sunday received a grenade attack that killed 8 of the civilians and left 50 of them injured.
The tragedy happened in the village of Shinya located in Burundi’s northern Kayanza province.
“Four of the victims died at the scene and the other four succumbed to their injuries,” said Pierre Nkurikiye, the police spokesman.
Nkurikiye did not say neither make an assumption of who might have carried out the attack or might be behind it, but however said, “An unknown person threw a grenade among the population in a bar.”
It is said that grenades of this nature targeting bars and other places where people gather have been rampant in the small and densely populated country (Burundi).
In a tweet on Monday, Pierre Nkurunziza, the President of Burundi offered condolences to the families of the deceased ones, “To the families who lost their next of kin in the terror attack … The perpetrators will surely be punished,” reads his tweet.
However, some sources insinuate that the attack was politically stimulated.
It is reported that Burundi’s insecurity began when President Nkurunziza bid for the third term in the office – says Nkurunziza’s opponents.
Reports show that at least 700 people and more have been killed in clashes between Nkurunziza’s supporters and his opponents since April 2015, when Nkurunziza said he would run for the third term in office, and suddenly was re-elected in July 2015.
His opponents in this case say that, President Nkurunziza violated the country’s constitution and the term of a peace deal that ended the previous rebellion.
Some NGOs estimated that 400,000 Burundians have so far been forced to leave from their homeland, seeking asylum elsewhere.
