After hearings from three Kenyan citizens that filed a petition against Uhuru Kenyatta’s 26 October presidential win, the Supreme Court ruled that the election process and the results announced were all done according to the law, and to the Court’s satisfaction.
According to Chief justice David Maraga, the Supreme Court judges reached a unanimous decision to dismiss the three petitions filed earlier to challenge Mr. Kenyatta’s presidential win.
The judges ruled that the 26 October election re-run was conducted in a transparent manner in accordance to the law, and that Uhuru Kenyatta was validly elected.
‘All six judges sitting on this case said that the petitions filed to the court to cancel the results of the rerun of the presidential election had no merit,’ reported the sources.
The Supreme Court’s ruling paves way for the President elect to be sworn in early next week, on Tuesday, 28 November.
Wafula Chebukati, the IEBC chairperson, welcomed the Court’s ruling and said he was satisfied with the decision made by the Court.
‘The unanimous determination by the honorable court affirms our resolve and deliberate efforts to conduct free, fair and credible elections,’ he said.
Raila Odinga, the opposition leader under the NASA party on hearing the announcement informed that the Court’s ruling was no surprise to him, as it was all expected and they so did as expected.
‘We … had repeatedly declared before this Supreme Court ruling today that we consider this government to be illegitimate and do not recognize it. This position has not been changed by the court ruling,’ Odinga said.
He further informed that they did not blame the Supreme Court for its ruling, but rather sympathized with it, as the decision was taken under duress, he said.
However, Kenyan citizens welcomed the news with different reactions accordingly.
Mr. kenyatta’s supporters received the news with celebrations and jubilations and on the other hand Raila Odinga’s supporters received the news with violence, reports show.
According to the sources, at least three of Mr. Odinga supporters were shot dead by the anti-riot police during the demonstrations.
