Manchester City have been banned from the Champions League.
The two-year ban imposed on the reigning Premier League champions was as a result of the “serious breaches of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations.
The club have also been fined £24.9million, but have announced that they will appeal the verdict.
City’s ban is effective from the start of next season, meaning that they will remain in this season’s competition and will face Real Madrid in the last-16 on February 26.
The ban was disclosed in a statement released on Friday 14th February, 2020, by UEFA.
“Following a hearing held on 22 January 2020 the Adjudicatory Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), chaired by José da Cunha Rodrigues, has today notified Manchester City Football Club of the final decision on the case which was referred by the CFCB Chief Investigator,” the statement reads.
The Adjudicatory Chamber, after considering all the evidence, found out that Manchester City Football Club breached UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations by overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016.
