COVID 19: Man who claims positive jailed for spitting at police

Callum Haeton, a 23 year old man from Lancashire has been jailed for a year after spitting at police while claiming he has coronavirus.

He was arrested for being drunk and disorderly after police were responded to a report of disturbance in Burnley on March 28.

He was accused of spitting at two officers during his arrest on Cog Lane, while repeating that he had caught COVID-19.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary has frowned at the act and called the offence particularly offensive and dangerous.

He said, “It is totally unacceptable that police and other frontline workers who are doing their best to keep our communities safe are treated like this.”

The accused appeared before the Burnley Magistrates’ Court on 30th March and pleaded guilty to one count of criminal damage and two counts of assault on an emergency worker.

He was sentenced to a jail term of 12 months.
