Bernie Sanders withdraws from US presidential race
Bernie Sanders, one of US candidates in 3rd November 3rd presidential election,
has withdrawn his interest in the presidential race.
Sanders made the announcement on Wednesday April 8th, 2020 during a call to his campaign staff.
It is believed that Sanders’ exit from the race would pave way for Joe Biden as the top Democratic candidate and strong contender for the exalted position.
Sanders was strong and was able to organize rallies full of suppers making him a national front-runner despite the large number of Democratic counterparts.
Sanders’ campaign however engulfed several millions of dollars made available through donations.
Through his presidential campaign journey, Sanders had had to contend with equally stronger contenders like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass, and John Biden. Warren as against Sanders’ “Medical for All” campaign bait, was the first to propose canceling students debt in April, but eventually dropped out of the race after the Super Tuesday night.
In his 2020 bid, Sanders sought to increase his population among black voters, and similarly worked to get support from Latino voters. However, Sanders did not get much of the black support as he had expected. He also lost most of his white supporters to Biden which caused him incredible votes in states like Michigan.
Along his campaign, Sanders faced lots of criticism that plummeted his number of votes. He faced accusations from women voters over sexism after Sander’s and Warren’s camps accused each other of dirty deeds which made Warren reference that Sanders had once said that he didn’t think a woman could win the presidency. Sanders however denied the accusations.
He also faced the criticism over his supporters dubbed “Bernie Bros’ attacking female union leaders in Nevada.
It stands that Biden is on the track to the eminent Democratic nomination with Sanders out of the race. Before Sanders quit, Biden’s chance had grown stronger with few other contenders already dropped out and eventually endorsed him – candidates like Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg both, which led to his winning of 10 out of 14 states, including Palmetto.
On 10 March, Biden dominated in five of the six states that were Sander’s 2016 stronghold, including Michigan. With Sanders losing votes in Florida, Illinois and Arizona on March 17, Biden has risen to the frontline of the democratic nomination.
After the March 17 losses, Faiz Shakir, Sanders’ campaign manager disclosed,
“No sugarcoating it. Last night did not go the way we wanted.”
“And while our campaign has won the battle of ideas, we are losing the battle over electability to Joe Biden,” Shakir added.
