NY Governor warns Coronavirus pandemic might get worse amidst protests
Governor Cuomo has warned that the demonstration which has been going on in New York and other cities against police brutality could cause coronavirus to hit back for a second time now that the state is experiencing a huge decline in the coronavirus cases.
Cuomo gave the warning on Monday June 1, 2020.
He warned protesters to be mindful of the danger of the pandemic,stressing that the ongoing protests could potentially be infecting hundreds and hundreds of people after everything that the country has done.
“We have to take a minute and ask ourselves, what are we doing here?” he said.
Speaking about how the state’s success in keeping down the rate of Covid-19 infections, the governor said that the levels of intubations and new hospitalizations have considerably reduced since the onset of the outbreak.
Referring to the significant reduction in daily recorded cases of the virus on Sunday, the governor said that “The progress is just phenomenal.”
Sadly though, 54 New Yorkers lost their lives to the pandemic same Sunday.
New York still remains a state in full lockdown as large gatherings remain banned and non-essential businesses are still shut down.
Governor shared the good news that the state is gearing up to enter its first phase of reopening but warned that the ongoing protests “could exacerbate the COVID-19 spread.”
As scheduled, the phase 2 of the reopening plan would see Capital Region and Western New York join five other upstate areas in New York as they resume activities as normal.
