One player from Tottenham has tested positive in the Premier League’s latest fifth round of coronavirus test.
The test result is another boost for the league’s Project Restart as out of 1,197 players and staff tested from 20 clubs on Monday 1 June and Tuesday 2 June, just one case was confirmed.
“The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 1 June and Tuesday 2 June, 1197 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, one has tested positive from one club,” the league said in statement.
“Players or club staff who test positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days,” it added.
Tottenham has confirmed the result but did not reveal the identity of the player.
“We have been informed by the Premier League that we have received one positive test for COVID-19 following the latest round of testing at our Training Centre.
“Due to medical confidentiality, the individual’s name will not be disclosed,” it continued.
The club further said that the player would self isolate for seven days. It also pledged to continue to adhere with the Premier League’s regulation to ensure safety of players and the club’s staff.
“They are currently asymptomatic and will now self-isolate for seven days, in line with Premier League protocol, before undergoing further testing.
“We shall continue to strictly adhere to the Premier League’s Return to Training protocol, which ensures our Training Centre remains a safe and virus-free working environment,” stated the club.
With the latest one case confirmed from the fifth round of the test, the total number of cases so far confirmed has come to 13 from 5,079 tests already carried out since 17th to 18th May when the twice-per-week centralized program began.
In the first three rounds, 12 positive cases were confirmed with six in the first round, two in the second, and four in the third. There were no cases confirmed in the fourth round.
For the Project Restart set to begin on June 17 this month behind closed doors, the One of the Premier League’s rules is that any player who tested positive for the virus would quarantine for 14 days, and self-isolate for 7 more days.
