The Premiere League announced on Thursday June 4 2020 that for the rest of 2019/2020 season clubs would be allowed to use up to five substitutes in a match when the season resumes on June 17.
The temporary amendment of the game rules was proposed by Chelsea and was agreed by a vote of 16-4 among the Premiere League shareholders, and was finally approved by the International Football Association Board last month.
Understandably, the rule change which Bundesliga is already adopting having resumed in May is due to the issues of coronavirus pandemic.
While making the announcement, the League said in a statement that “Premier League Shareholders today agreed temporary changes to the rules relating to substitute players.
“For the remainder of the 2019/20 season, the number of substitutes that can be used during a match will increase from three to five players.
“This is in line with the temporary law amendment made by the International Football Association Board last month.”
However, it was stated that substitution would be made at maximum of three points in a match in order to avoid unnecessary delay.
The Premier League shareholders also agreed that clubs would increase the number of players on the bench from seven to nine.
“Shareholders also approved for Clubs to increase the maximum number of substitute players on the bench from seven to nine for the rest of the 2019/20 season,” the statement added.
