Kuwait has said the first batch of Japanese medicine will arrive in the country next week.

Disclosing this on Friday June 5, 2020, Kuwait’s Health Ministry said the first shipment of Japanese medicine would arrive in the country next week, following the drug’s positive results in clinical trials conducted by many countries to treat the novel coronavirus disease.

The first batch of the drug comes within the emergency response and humanitarian purposes without a commercial value from the Japanese government, officials announced.

“The medicine’s use will be in accordance with Japanese guidelines, World Health Organisation’s recommendations and Kuwait’s regulations,” said the Ministry’s Assistant Undersecretary for Medicines and Medical Affairs, Dr Abdullah Al-Bader.

Al-Bader appreciated the Ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Kuwait for their cordial relationship, which has facilitated the process of getting the humanitarian support on COVID-19 treatment.

An agreement was reached between the governments of Kuwait and Japan on 19 April, 2020, and between Kuwait and the United Nations office for project services on 30 April, 2020, and 19 May, 2020, to provide the medicine.

The antiviral medication from Japan with the name Favipiravir is sold under the brand name Avigan.
