COVID-19 death toll among Egyptian doctors hits 47

On Sunday 8 June, 2020, the total number of coronavirus fatalities among Egyptian doctors rose to 47 after the death of 11 doctors in less than a week.

Ibrahim El-Zayat, a board member of the Egypt’s Medical Syndicate said that the 47th doctor who died from coronavirus complications was Dr Philipe Mitri, an ear, nose and throat consultant.

According to El-Zayat, over 400 other doctors have contracted the virus so far while 6 other doctors passed away from coronavirus on Saturday.

The six doctors are obstetrics and gynaecology consultants Samir Othman, Ayman Zaki and Youhana Lotfy, pediatric surgeon Mahmoud Khedr, pediatrician Hisham Abd El-Hamid, and neurosurgeon Sayid Rushdy.

The country’s Medical Syndicate had earlier requested that medical workers be provided with adequate protective measures including personal protective equipment (PPE) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests and training.

In response to the request, the Ministry of Health has announced the allocation of 20 beds at each quarantine hospital across the country for health care workers.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said that Egyptian doctors who died due to the pandemic are treated as matyres.

“Financial compensations to the doctors’ families will be taken care of by the Fund of Medical Professions as announced by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in late March,” he added.

Egypt has recorded 32, 612 confirmed cases and 1,198 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic as reported by Egypt’s Health Ministry on Saturday 6 June, 2020.
