Stranded migrants face torment, abuse in Yemen
The United Nations migration agency has reported that thousands of African migrants especially Ethiopians are subjected to torment and various forms of abuse in Yemen.
While disclosing this on Thursday July 16, 2020, the agency stated that not less than 14,500 Africans have been forcibly transferred during the COVID-19 pandemic.
International Organization for Migration maintained that most of the stranded Africans have been packed and trucked to places like Aden and Marib where hopes of return to their homes are slim.
IOM spokesman Paul Dillon said, “It’s a very dire situation when you combine access (difficulties) and the circumstances in which they live – a mobile population in urban environments.”
He added that “An unknown number of the stranded migrants could be held in detention centres that had poor hygiene standards even before the outbreak of COVID-19.”
He however stated that locals and charities were helping some of the migrants.
