Iran detains US-based opposition leader over 2008 explosion attack
Iran Intelligence Ministry has said that it has arrested Jamshid Sharmahd, leader of a pro-monarchist group called Tondar, for being the brains behind a deadly bomb attack in 2008, and planning another series of attacks on the country.
While confirming Sharmahd’s arrest on Saturday August 1, 2020, The Iranian Intelligence Ministry said Jamshid Sharmahd, the ringleader of the terrorist groups, who directed armed and terrorist acts in Iran from America, was arrested following a complicated operation, and is now in powerful hands.
The Iranian Intelligence Ministry said that a 2008 bomb attack in the city of Shiraz, claiming about 14 lives with 215 seriously wounded, was planned and carried out by Sharmahd.
The Ministry also stated that in recent years it has aborted several other attacks by the group. One of the aborted operations was Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s shrine the group has intended blowing up.
The Tondar group has not yet confirmed Sharmahd’s arrest as it indicated on its website that stories being spread by various networks in Iran have not been confirmed.
The Tondar, a group hell-bent on overthrowing the Islamic regime and restoring former Iranian monarchy, however, said that it would continue to pursue its course with or without a commander.
For the fact that the group bases and operates in Los Angeles, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the United States should be held responsible for not taking action against the group for its armed and terrorist operations.
Mahmoud Alavi, Iranian Intelligence Minister, called the group a royalist opposition that is violence prone whose leader travels the world freely without facing arrest.
“Despite our complaint to Interpol, Sharmahd would travel everywhere under his own name.
“This shows how empty anti-terror slogans by Americans and their Europeans allies are,” Mahmoud said while addressing the Iran State TV.
Tondar, also known as Kingdom Assembly of Iran, has claimed responsibility for some attacks including Shiraz explosion in 2008, a 2006 attack in a refinery, and another Shiraz attack in June 2019 on a seminary used by Revolutionary Guards.
