President Barrow pardons prisoners amidst Eid ul Fitri celebration
The Gambian President, Adama Barrow, has pardoned 57 prisoners, including non-Gambians amnesty.
This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday May 12, 2021.
According to the statement, the president’s action is a long-standing custom for to grant prerogative of mercy on deserving convicted prisoners.
“His Excellency President Adama Barrow, pursuant to the powers vested in him under Section 82 (1) (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia granted pardon to fifty-seven (57) prisoners in commemoration of the Muslim feast of Eid/ul- Fitr 2021 locally known as ‘Koriteh’,” the statement reads.
The pardoned prisoners include forty-one Gambians, ten Senegalese, three Conakry Guinean, two Nigerians, and an Indian.
“All Non-Gambians shall be deported immediately upon release,” the statement adds.
