Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, engaged in talks with Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, during his inaugural visit to the kingdom. The meeting, held in Jeddah on Friday, marked a pivotal moment in the evolving diplomatic landscape.
Amir-Abdollahian’s journey to Riyadh commenced on Thursday, and the Saudi foreign ministry disclosed that the talks encompassed an extensive range of subjects. These discussions spanned bilateral relations, potential avenues for cooperation, and the overall enhancement of ties between the two nations. Additionally, the officials delved into recent regional and global developments.

Amir-Abdollahian hailed the tête-à -tête as “direct, frank, and productive,” and underlined its focus on matters of bilateral relations, security, and development. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and development-oriented collaboration for the region’s success.
The diplomatic rekindling between Shiite-majority Iran and Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia follows a period of severed ties, beginning in 2016. The March announcement of restored diplomatic relations, brokered by China, has been met with hope. The two nations’ opposing stances in various Middle Eastern conflict zones, including Yemen, have contributed to regional complexities for years.
Addressing the media alongside his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Amir-Abdollahian expressed optimism regarding the direction of their ties. He hinted at the potential for a future meeting between the two countries’ heads of state, indicating a positive trajectory in the diplomatic relationship.
While Amir-Abdollahian praised existing economic and security cooperation, no new agreements were revealed during his visit. The Iranian diplomat was accompanied by Alireza Enayati, Iran’s new ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Amir-Abdollahian proposed a “regional dialogue” as a way to bolster unity within the Islamic world.
In the aftermath of the March reconciliation, Saudi Arabia has taken strides toward peace in Yemen. The nation engaged in direct negotiations with Huthi leaders in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, and also championed the reintegration of Syria, a key Iranian ally, into the Arab League.
