Four UN peacekeepers have been killed, and eight others seriously wounded in an ambush in West Darfur region of Sudan.

According to UN spokesman Martin Nesirky, the ambush took place at a
place called El-Geneina..

This is not the first time that UN peacekeepers are killed in an ambush in Darfur. Over 20 UN soldiers have so far been killed during patrols in the past 3 years in ambushes often laid by suspected rebels.

He said. ‘We have lost four peacekeepers in an ambush. It took place at El-Geneina last evening. Eight other peacekeepers were rushed to hospital after sustaining injuries during the ambush.’

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon has reportedly been appalled and deeply saddened at the latest attack on peacekeepers and urges the government of Sudan to conduct a full investigation and to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.

Since 2003 when rebels started fighting the central government, Darfur has been experiencing conflicts in which hundreds of people have been killed and thousands displaced into camps.

UN sent thee peacekeepers a few years ago but they have often been attacked by the rebels. However the rebels claim it is Sudan government troops that attack and kill the peacekeepers.
