Women in Swaziland are not happy about the governments decision to ban them from wearing mini-skirts.
They say that police’s argument that mini-skirts are he ones that provoke men to rape women is not only unfounded but also illogical.
One of the women leaders in Swaziland Tina Nkono said, ‘I do not think it is because of mini-skirts that men rape women.I was in America and Britain where I saw women in very short dresses and skirts but men were not raping them.’
Police in Swaziland recently banned women from wearing miniskirts and midriff-revealing tops saying they provoke rape. Those found wearing mini-skirts will be arrested and prosecuted. They face a six-month jail term.
Swaziland police spokesperson Wendy Hleta said, Police will arrest women who wear provoking mini-skirts. ‘When women wear short clothes, the act of the rapist is made easy. They will be arrested,” she said.
Ironically, the ban does not apply to traditional costumes worn by young women especially during Reed dance where the ruling King Mswati, who already has 13 women chooses a wife. During that ceremony the girls leave parts of heir bodies, including breasts in the open.
Some time back, women in Swaziland demonstrated against rampart rape in the country.
