Muslim prisoners in Uganda have asked fellow Muslims in Uganda and other parts of the world to help them acquire Korans.

The Muslims who called for being provided with Korans are at the Uganda government Prison Farm in Rwimi, Kabarole district 300 kms west of the country’s capital Kampala.

‘We do not have prayer materials.’ said one of the inmates, Abdu Zake. ‘We lack Korans. We are over 100 Muslims in the prison but we
share only 4 Korans. Fellow Muslims out there should donate to us some Korans.’

He said they also lack mats to pray on.

The leader of the Muslim inmates, Sheikh Nuhu Kibuuka said that it is not easy to conduct prayers in prisons due to shortage of Korans and mats for the inmates.

‘I appeal to fellow Muslims to help our brothers in prisons by providing them with mats and Korans. said Kibuuka.

According to Uganda prisons spokesman, Frank Baine, although prisons act says that inmates have the right to exercise their religious
beliefs, they can not provide the Muslims with mats and Korans due to other pressing demands.

Muslims in other prisons in the country also expressed the same problems. Prisons in Uganda are overcrowded with insufficient services provided to inmates.
