Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni has commended the Sri Lankan private companies in Uganda for their contribution towards electricity production.
Museveni said, “They come here with their own money and are setting up small hydro power stations which are helping us a lot.”
Museveni was yesterday meeting the Defense and Urban Development minister of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa who paid a courtesy call on him at State House Entebbe. Minister Gotabaya was accompanied by the Sri Lankan United Nations representative major general Shavendra Silva, the Chief of Staff of SLAF Kolitha Gunathilake and the high commissioner of Sri Lanka to Uganda Kana Vellupillai Kananathan.
The two discussed various issues of interest concerning the two countries and how best to explore bilateral opportunities. President Museveni pledged government’s moral support towards the government of Sri Lanka.
According to Minister Gotabaya, their core interest is to strengthen the cooperation between Uganda and Sri Lanka, especially in trade. Others areas include relief and disaster management as well as sharing experiences in terrorism suppression. The team also presented gifts to president Museveni.
Sri Lanka and Uganda have been strengthening bilateral relations in recent times. Sri Lankan President Mahindra Rajapaksa made an official visit to Uganda in May this year during which he commissioned the Sri Lanka high commission offices at the imperial royal hotel in Kampala.
Sri Lanka is predominantly known for tea and coffee growing and production.
