2 YEARS AND NO JUSTICE FOR MAHFUZA RAHMAN

0

It has been two years since the disappearance of Mahfuza Rahman and the NYPD now believes she is dead. When her name is mentioned in the Bangladeshi community the men say “Oh the one that ran away with another man” and the sisters are silent because they don’t want to be labeled as troublemakers. This is not an Islamic view but a cultural practice called “Honor Killings”. The Quran states “Whoever kills a believer intentionally, their reward will be Hell, to abide therein forever, and the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon them, and a dreadful penalty is prepared for them.” (Quran, 4:93).

A year ago, Bangladeshi American Community Council President Mohammed Mujumder expressed sincere concerns for our sister’s whereabouts and was calling out for justice. A year has passed and still her whereabouts is unknown. The investigation has been a standstill due to her husband fleeing to his native homeland of Bangladesh with their now 11 year daughter who is a United States citizen. The family has called from Bangladesh to express how they feel about Mohammed Chowdhury, they labelled him a lying murderer who is hiding from justice. New York Daily News has had extensive news reporting of her disappearance ever since. We call on the government of Bangladesh to expedite his extradition back to the United States to face justice as a prime suspect..

“Honor Killings” is a cultural practice that is used by communities to uphold a so-called family dignity but in no way is this allowed in Islam.

A press conference will be held in coming days for the apprehension and surrender of Mohammed Chowdhury to United States law enforcement authorities.
