A 17-year-old boy is being mourned as a hero after he trying to rescue a driver who had crashed into a lake.

Police in Sunset City, Florida did not release the identity of the youth.

While both he and the 18-year-old driver were pulled from the water, neither survived, police told WPLG-TV.

It was about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday when the teen driver, lost in the neighborhood, made a wrong turn in the four-door Lexus he was driving and ended up in a canal, police told WPLG.

The other teen was walking in the area with his mother, saw the car plunge into the water, and jumped in after it. He did not surface.

“It did take them a while to find the first person they pulled out,” neighbor Daniel Welborn told WPLG. “It was like 15 or 20 minutes.”

Fire and police rescue responded and gave the good Samaritan CPR before he was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver, who was apparently alone in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, WPLG said.

Police are investigating the crash.
